did the Canadian War Cemetery arise ? On

arised. You can also read, that on the 4 th of Mai 1947 the cemetery
officialy was opened by the Dutch queen in those days, Queen Wilhelmina.

GROESBEEK CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY. Hier liggen voornamelijk Canadezen begraven, die omkwamen tijdens de heftige gevechten om het Rijnland in februari en maart 1945. De begraafplaats is ongewoon omdat vele doden die hier begraven liggen overgebracht zijn vanuit Duitsland. Zodoende is dit één van de weinige keren dat lichamen de grens over werden gebracht. De meeste slachtoffers werden begraven in het land en zelfs stad waar zij omkwamen. Voor zover kan worden vastgesteld zijn alle Canadese soldaten (op één na die begraven ligt op het Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Duitsland) die omkwamen in de Rijnland gevechten hier herbegraven. Generaal Crerar, commandant van de Canadese landmacht in Europa, gaf een order uit dat er geen Canadese doden begraven zouden worden in Duitse grond. Dit betrof alleen de landmacht en niet omgekomen personeel van de lucht- en zeemacht. |
